Ishmael soon learns that Ahab seeks one specific whale, Moby Dick, a white whale of tremendous size and ferocity. Comparatively few whaleships know of Moby Dick, and fewer yet have encountered him. In a previous encounter, the whale destroyed Ahab's boat and bit off his leg. Ahab intends to take revenge.
Through the main character's journey, the concepts of class and social status, good and evil, and the existence of gods are all examined as Ishmael speculates upon his personal beliefs and his place in the universe. The narrator's reflections, along with his descriptions of a sailor's life aboard a whaling ship, are woven into the narrative along with Shakespearean literary devices such as stage directions, extended soliloquies and asides.Note de contenu : themes: hunt - revenge - adventure - cruelty - good - evil - beliefs - universe - social status Permalink : https://biblio.esnd.be/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=1340 Exemplaires (1)

Titre : A tale of two cities Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Charles Dickens (1812-1870), Auteur Editeur : Longman Année de publication : 1964 Collection : Longmans'simplified English series Importance : 158 p. Format : 18 cm Note générale : Level advanced Langues : Anglais (eng) Catégories : 8b-Littérature:Littérature étrangère:Littérature anglaise Index. décimale : 830 ANG Anglais - voir 830 Résumé : A TALE OF TWO CITIES begins on a muddy English road in an atmosphere charged with mystery and it ends in the Paris of the Revolution with one of the most famous acts of self-sacrifice in literature. In between lies one of Dickens's most exciting books--a historical novel that, generation after generation, has given readers access to the profound human dramas that lie behind cataclysmic social and political events. Famous for its vivid characters, including the courageous French nobleman Charles Darnay, the vengeful revolutionary Madame Defarge, and cynical Englishman Sydney Carton, who redeems his ill-spent life in a climactic moment at the guillotine ("It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done"), the novel is also a powerful study of crowd psychology and the dark emotions aroused by the Revolution, illuminated by Dickens's lively comedy.
